Give me a list to check things off of and I’m a happy girl. While I don’t support the whole “new year, new you” marketing mumbo jumbo (whose primary goal is to get consumers to spend money because they feel bad about themselves), I do think we can take the concept of resolutions and goals to craft a list of things we want and go out and do it.
The list concept applies not only to personal goals, but to your style goals as well. In fact, I think it’s even more important to craft a list when it comes to style because there are so many entities competing for your attention, time, and money. in fact, they are banking on your inattention in order to keep you in a cycle of not knowing your style.
If you don’t already have a good handle on your style, my first recommendation is to create your Structure of Style (see the end of this email for how to get my workbook and join the January group). You’ll get a lot of good list fodder from Style Lab.
My second recommendation is to craft a very specific list of what you want for your style for 2025 - this can be specific, abstract, certain items, or a feeling.
Here’s my list of 2025 Style Goals:
Purchase a matching PJ set. This has been the bane of my closet for years. I am a mis-matched, sweat pants and t-shirt girl, especially since I don’t actually sleep in clothes. But I would love a cute little set for travel/vacations or just feeling more put together. I actively don’t like the look of most traditional pj sets nor am I that excited about spending $100 per piece for something. On the other end of the spectrum, I don’t want to spend my money on a not great quality set from Target or Amazon, so I just end up in a spiral on this topic. Most likely, I will need to order a few sets from various places in order to compare and go from there.
Buy 2-3 cashmere socks, specifically red, sky blue, and grey. Colored socks were a big trend I noticed this year. I like to let trends settle for a bit before I decide if they are for me and while I’m over seeing everyone wearing red socks, I think enough time has passed that I will be happy with these additions. Also, I’ve been wearing my Darn Tough socks for years now (and will continue to, especially for outdoor activities like hiking), but it would be nice to upgrade my sock wardrobe a bit to feel a bit more adult and refined.
Add a new accent color to my Structure of Style color palette. In Style Lab, I teach you how to create a color palette and what accent colors are. My current accent colors are maroon and gold. This past year, I also added more pops of bright red/orange as an accent. Thinking about my primary and secondary colors, a fun addition to the accent colors could be hot pink, light blue, or maybe getting more into the green family with some forest green. We shall see what speaks to me!
Wear my skirts and dresses more often. My first pass when writing this goal was “have fun, get dressed.” This is good, but I think to make this one more impactful for me, I am putting a focus on using my skirts and dresses as a focus of having fun and getting dressed. I tend to rotate into my core wardrobe (what I call my tried and trues) a LOT: easy jeans + a top that I add a belt and jewelry to and call it a day. This is a fine strategy for getting dressed and keeping things simple. Sometimes the day calls for simple. But I truly love when I put together a fun, experimental outfit and I have a LOT of skirts and dresses to get creative with. This might force a shoe wardrobe update as well (I find I like certain styles of shoes with certain lengths of dresses/skirts), so we’ll add that as a subgoal.
Fill in shoe wardrobe gaps. See above. + I really need to buy a new pair of leather/suede Birkenstocks as mine are quite literally disintegrating I’ve had and worn them that much.
Here’s what is NOT on my style goals list:
Fit into my size 24 jeans again
Buy clothes that are flattering
Spend less money on clothes
Curate a capsule wardrobe (stay tuned for a article on why I’m breaking up with capsule wardrobes ;))
The above goals are abstract and honestly, feel a bit icky to me when I think about them. They are what I consider “traditional” goals - they are based on restriction, reduction, and beating yourself up if you don’t accomplish them.
My actual list is based on the principles of: purchasing specific items, adding delight into getting dressed, and experimenting with my wardrobe.
When I focus on these things, I’m able to cultivate even more of my own personal taste and style. Which in turn, actually makes it easier for me to get dressed, go shopping, and even get rid of items that no longer make the cut.
This type of style list can take practice, but it switches your focus tapping into your senses and wearing what feels good.
And that, is style.
